There are plenty of foods that are safe for diabetics but foods that are recommended for diabetics are foods that improve the health of the diabetic by increasing the body’s ability to control blood glucose levels.
Complex carbohydrates greatly improve the health of diabetics by helping to slow and control glucose release in the body. Complex carbohydrates include beans, nuts, and whole grains such as oatmeal. Whole grains can also be found in whole wheat pasta, whole wheat flower and breads, and baked goods made with mostly or all whole wheat flour. Most fruits and vegetables are complex carbohydrates and therefore they are foods highly recommended for diabetics.
Specific foods recommended for diabetics include guavas, broccoli, green tea, and cinnamon. Omega three fatty acids help diabetics a lot and are available through mackerel, herring, salmon, sardines, and tuna. 2000 mg of fish oil a day is recommended for keeping a healthy level of omega three fatty acids. Wheat germ and walnuts are also good for diabetics. Wheat germ can be sprinkled on your morning oatmeal or you can add a tablespoon or two to your soup. Even though it is good for these foods to be in your diet often, there are no free foods for diabetics because diabetics must control their weight to decrease the symptoms of diabetes.
60% of diabetics calories should come from carbohydrates and 99.9% of diabetic’s carbohydrate intake should be complex carbohydrates. 10-20% percent of diabetic’s calories should come from protein. The best proteins for diabetics are beans, raw nuts, fish, poultry, and eggs. 30% of diabetic’s calories should come from fats and diabetics really shouldn’t have more than 10% of saturated fats daily. Last but not least, diabetics should eat 20-35 grams of fiber a day.
People with type 2 diabetes can reverse their condition through proper weight management to the point where they no longer need insulin. People with type 1 diabetes will always need some amount of insulin but following a good diet can greatly improve their health and alleviate many symptoms associated with diabetes.
